Thermoelectric energy converters offer a promising solution to generate electrical power using heat in the nuclear reactor core. Despite significant improvements thermoelectric efficiency of nanostructured materials, performance these advanced materials has yet be demonstrated harsh radiation environment Herein, we demonstrate generator (TEG) made from bulk half-Heusler (HH) generating stable density > 1140 W/m2 after 30 days MIT Nuclear Research Reactor under an unprecedented fast-neutron (>1 MeV) fluence 1.5 × 1020 n/cm2. initial degradation due irradiation damage when operating relatively low temperatures, our TEG showed 20-fold increase output high temperature in-situ annealing and resulting property recovery. First-principles modeling indicates that chemically disordered metallic phase was formed at lower drastic properties, while sufficiently temperatures system returned ordered HH properties recovered. Transmission electron microscopy diffraction upon ion irradiation, confirming prediction first-principles simulations. The results suggest with proper control over TEGs could produce operate indefinitely core reactor.
